Panthers down Caltech in women's tennis SCIAC opener

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Chapman University's women's tennis team began the 2014 regular season and SCIAC schedule with an 8-1 victory over Caltech on Saturday at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.

Saturday's hardcourt showdown began with Chapman (1-0 overall, 1-0 SCIAC) sweeping Caltech (0-1 overall, 0-1 SCIAC) in the doubles competition. Chapman sophomore Andrea Hammer and junior Rachel Fox took down Caltech's No.1 pairing 9-8 in the first match.

Panthers' junior Sophia Duong and freshman Madeline Saunders won the second match 8-5, followed by an 8-6 victory by Chapman seniors Kelley Klebenow and Madison Mathis.

Caltech came out strong to start the singles as No.1-slated Caltech senior Rebekah Kitto defeated Hammer – Chapman's No.1 – in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. However, the Panthers would rally to defeat Caltech in the next five singles matchups. Chapman's Fox, Duong, Saunders, Klebenow and senior Anna Nelson handed the Beavers decisive victories, sweeping the competition in straight sets to seal the victory for the Panthers.

Chapman's women's tennis team will next take on Arizona Christian University on Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
