Women's tennis falls to No. 11 WashU, beats No. 23 Trinity

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team split a pair of matches against two nationally-ranked opponents this week, falling to No. 11 Washington University (Mo.) 7-2 on Sunday before knocking off No. 23 Trinity University (Texas) 5-4 on Tuesday behind a match-clinching victory by senior Kelley Klebenow.

Washington 7, Chapman 2

The Chapman No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Andrea Hammer and junior Rachel Fox won their match 8-3 and improved their doubles-win streak to five, but the Panthers found themselves down 2-1 at the completion of the doubles matches.

The Bears would not let up, taking five of the six singles matches as Washington (7-2) won the match 7-2.

The Panthers lone singles victory came on the No. 2 court as Fox improved to 5-2 in dual matches, by beating sophomore Aly Coran in straight sets 6-0 and 6-4.

Chapman 5, Trinity 4

Chapman (4-3) got off to a good start by taking two of three matches from the Tigers. Chapman No. 1 doubles team of Hammer and Fox moved to a team-best 7-2 by winning their match 8-0. Junior Sophia Duong and Klebenow improved their doubles-win streak to four, by besting their Trinity opponents 8-4.

The Panthers and the Tigers split the first four singles matches bringing the match score to 4-3 in favor of Chapman with two singles matches to go. Trinity then tied the match when sophomore Gabrielle Row beat senior Anna Nelson (6-1, 6-0),to leave the match in the hands of the No. 6 players. Klebenow handled the pressure by winning her match against senior Kathleen Lundquist in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) and sealed the victory for Chapman.

The No. 8 regionally-ranked Panthers will return to the courts March 13 as Chapman takes on the West Region's No. 9-ranked Texas-Tyler at the Chapman Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
