Duong advances to Round of 16 at Fall Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Chapman University women's tennis senior Sophia Duong picked up from where she left off when she won 20 matches in the spring, advancing to the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Fall Regional Championships at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges over the weekend.

Duong, a No. 9 seed in the Panthers' only fall competition, won her first two matches in straight sets and advanced to the Round of 16 before getting knocked out by No. 3 seed Katie Kuosman from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Senior Sarah McDonald and sophomore Madeline Saunders each earned victories in their first round matchups in the singles bracket. Saunders advanced 6-0, 6-0 over Vinciane Chan from Caltech and McDonald rallied in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Tyler Garant from Redlands. But both were knocked out in the Round of 32. Saunders then earned a tie-break win in the consolation bracket before being eliminated for good.

The Panthers' top seed junior Andrea Hammer, who entered the event as the No. 5 seed, was eliminated in the Round of 32 after a first-round bye.

Chapman's teams were shutout in the doubles bracket, going 0-for-3 on Friday. Hammer and Saunders were the No. 5 seed in the tournament, but got upset by an unseeded pair from Claremont.
