No. 40 Trinity hands Panther women 7-2 defeat

ORANGE, Calif. – The second of three home matches in three days for the Chapman University women's tennis team didn't fare as well as the first as the Panthers fell to No. 40-ranked Trinity University (Texas) 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The No. 31 Panthers dropped to 0-3 against nationally-ranked teams so far this season.

Senior Sophia Duong remained perfect (4-0) in dual matches this season, but needed to rally to do it after dropping the first set. The senior defeated Trinity's Caroline White in three sets 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 on the third court and is now 26-5 in her last 31 singles matches dating back to the start of last season.

Another senior Rachel Fox got the Panthers their first win of the day, defeating the Tigers' Marie Lutz in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 on court two. It was Fox's first singles win of the season and first win against a regionally-ranked opponent (Lutz is ranked No. 9 in the West).

The Panthers were swept in doubles play on Wednesday with Duong and sophomore Madeline Saunders (3-1 record) losing for the first time this season 8-6 on court two. Fox and junior Andrea Hammer dropped to 1-3 this season at No. 1 doubles, losing to the West Region's second-ranked Lutz and Liza Southwick, 8-5.

After defeating Rochester on Tuesday, Chapman's third consecutive match in as many days features the Panthers hosting Wesleyan College (Conn.) on Thursday at the Chapman Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
