Duong, Saunders lead Panthers at Ojai Tournament

OJAI, Calif. – Senior Sophia Duong and sophomore Madeline Saunders earned singles wins and a doubles win to lead the Chapman University women's tennis team at the 115th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament this weekend. Duong and Saunders reached the Round of 32 in singles play before being eliminated.

The duo also earned a first-round win in the Round of 32 in doubles, defeating Cal Lutheran pair Annette Sousa and Emily Werman in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Duong and Saunders, along with junior Andrea Hammer and senior Rachel Fox who received a first round bye, were all ousted in the Round of 16 on Friday.

Duong and Saunders were the only Panthers to advance past the Round of 64 in the Independent Colleges singles bracket as Duong improved to 11-11 overall this season with a straight sets win over Vinci Chen from Caltech, 6-1, 6-0. Saunders earned her team-leading 14th singles win of the year with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Jada Henry from Whittier.

Chapman (8-10 overall, 4-4 SCIAC) will be the No. 5 seed in the SCIAC Championships which begin on Friday at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
