Women's tennis fall to Linfield in season-opener

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team dropped its season-opener to Linfield on Saturday, 8-1. Nicole Fouts scored the Panthers lone point with a singles win.

Fouts won the third-set tiebreak to help Chapman avoid the shutout. After dropping the first set 6-1, she turned the tables with a 6-2 win in the second and won the tiebreak third set 15-13. Andrea Hammer fell 6-2, 6-0 to nationally-ranked Ella Riddle in the top singles match and Madeline Saunders fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.

Fouts was one of five Panthers to make their collegiate debuts this against Linfield. Danielle Simmons, Thimanthi Withana, and Maya Nowak all found their way into the singles lineup but fell in straight sets.

Annie Sullivan made her debut in the No. 2 doubles pairing but fell 8-1 with her partner Withana. Linfield took all three doubles points despite a hard-fought match at No. 1 that saw Hammer and Saunders fall 8-5.
