Women's tennis picks up win over Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – The women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season with a 5-4 win over Caltech on Friday but fell 9-0 to No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. Senior Andrea Hammer led the win over Caltech with a win at the top singles and doubles spot.

Hammer teamed up with junior Madeline Saunders to pick up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Caltech. Caltech's No. 2 doubles team edged out Chapman's duo in a tiebreak to even the match. Chapman took the No. 3 win by forfeit for a 2-1 advantage heading into singles.

Hammer won a decisive 6-1, 6-0 match in the top singles match to put the Panthers to points away from the team win. With a Caltech forfeit at No. 6, the Panthers needed just one more singles win and got it from freshman Thimanthi Withana at No. 5. She battled to a 6-2, 6-3 win to secure the Panther win.

The win was Withana's second of the season in singles while Hammer improved to 3-2 in SCIAC matches.

The Panthers ran into a tough matchup with nationally-ranked CMS. The Athenas took a pair of doubles matches 8-0 and then took all six singles matches in straight sets to get the sweep.

The Panthers head to Ojai this weekend for the annual Ojai Tournament.
