Women's tennis drops home finale

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team dropped its final two home matches to wrap up the regular season. The Panthers dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Occidental on Friday and fell 9-0 to Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead against Oxy after winning the top two doubles matches. Senior Madeline Saunders and sophomore Jaye Orikasa took the No. 1 match 8-2 while sophomore Nicole Fouts and freshman Raven Hampton won 8-5 at No. 2.

The Tigers battled back to take four of the six singles matches after winning the No. 3 doubles match to take the team win. Saunders won at No. 1 singles in straight sets while Hampton won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4. Oxy won its four singles matches in straight sets although sophomore Danielle Simmons battled to a tiebreaker in the first set before narrowly dropping the second in a 7-6, 6-4 loss at No. 5.

Chapman was back on the courts the next morning to take on Cal Lutheran but the Regals swept through the doubles matches and five of the six singles matches. Fouts won her first set 7-5 but dropped the second and the super tiebreaker third set in a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) loss at No. 2 singles.

The Panthers head to the Ojai Tournament next week and return for the SCIAC Tournament, which the Panthers will open at top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on May 5.
