Women's tennis drops hard-fought match to No. 16 UMW

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team fell 6-3 to No. 16 Mary Washington on Tuesday. Sophomore Liza Antonova pulled off an upset over a nationally-ranked player to highlight the match.

Mary Washington came into the match with a pair of nationally-ranked doubles teams and swept through the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers embarked on a comeback attempt with straight set wins in the top doubles matches and a win by retirement. Junior Vasilisa Trofimova took the first point when her opponent retired after winning the first set.

Antonova took down No. 19-ranked singles player Claire Coleman 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 match and sophomore Tatum Phillips won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 to improve to 3-2 this spring at the top of the lineup.

UMW took the No. 4 match in straight sets while the final two matches went into a third set. The Panthers needed both to pull off the upset but Mary Washington grabbed both points to lcinch the match. Freshman Mary Williams won her first set but fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 while junior Anna Maite Kaplan dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 match at No. 6.

The Panthers are back at home on Sunday at 2 p.m. to take on Washington University – St. Louis.
