Struggles continue as volleyball drops fourth straight
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team's season-long slump continued on Friday night as it dropped its fourth consecutive match, this time falling to visiting Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 21-25, 25-20, 25-8, 25-16 at the Hutton Sports Center. The Panthers fell a little further from the SCIAC pack with the loss, currently sitting in sixth place in the conference standings with five teams at .500 or better.
Chapman (3-12 overall, 2-4 SCIAC) had hoped a new month would produce different results and the outlook looked promising for the Panthers early on as they took the opening set 25-21. Junior OH Michele Hammer earned seven of her team-high 17 kills in the first set and led the passing game with eight digs.
But Pomona-Pitzer (10-6 overall, 4-3 SCIAC) rallied back in the second set to win a closely-contested battle 25-20, recording six of the team's 12 blocks in the set. Things then unraveled for the Panthers in the third set as they fell behind 16-2 thanks to three long scoring runs by the Sagehens, who cruised to a 25-8 win and then closed it out in the fourth 25-16.
Three Sagehens reached double digits in kills, led by senior OH Allie Frappier with 14 kills. Frappier finished with a double-double adding 17 digs.
Hammer garnered her seventh double-double of the year for Chapman with a team-high 21 digs. Senior libero Andi Frisina equaled the team-high with 21 digs and freshman S Jade Santos earned 38 assists and 12 digs.
No rest for the weary as the Panthers will have to get up off the mat and travel to Occidental College on Saturday at 6 p.m. The women will return to Orange for three straight home matches beginning on Tuesday when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a SCIAC match that will mark the halfway point of the conference schedule.
