Slugs sweep volleyball in non-conference play

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team lost at home on Friday night in three sets to visiting UC Santa Cruz 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 in a non-conference match at the Hutton Sports Center. The guest Banana Slugs hit .311 as a team to sweep the two-match season series with the Panthers.

UC Santa Cruz (12-5) hit with great efficiency on Friday with three players: Sandra Gutierrez, Kim Rabii and Kellie Graves combining for 29 kills and just two attack errors for a .333 hitting percentage. The rest of the team followed suit, especially in the match-clinching win in set three when the Slugs hit .357 and earned their largest margin of victory in the match 25-16.

Gutierrez led UCSC with 12 kills and a .550 hitting percentage, while Rabii finished with 10 kills.

Chapman (5-14) was led by senior MB Val Geiger who finished with a match-high 13 kills. Junior OH Michele Hammer pitched in eight kills and seven digs. Freshman S Jade Santos earned 30 assists and a team-high 17 digs.

The Panthers fell to 2-4 at the Hutton Center this season. They return to SCIAC play on Saturday when they travel to Pasadena to take on Caltech at 6 p.m. The first of Chapman's final three matches at home will take place on Tuesday as it hosts the University of La Verne at 7:30 p.m.
