Panthers Open 2015 With Sweep Of Antelope Valley

ORANGE, Calif. – Michele Hammer began her senior campaign with 15 kills and led the Chapman University women's volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-19 sweep of visiting Antelope Valley. Freshman Kaitlyn Raymundo was just shy of a double-double in her Panthers debut.

Chapman (1-0) had a hot start to the season, hitting .270 in the first set and leading the entire way. The Pioneers (0-1) challenged more in the second set, coming up with seven of their ten team blocks in the middle set, but a late Panther run made it a 2-0 Panther lead in the match.

Hammer led Chapman with six kills in the third as Chapman hit .200 in the set to take the quick sweep. UAV hit .121 in the set – its high for the night – but couldn't avoid the sweep in its first match in program history.

Raymundo had a big night setting for the Panthers and was just short of a double-double with 35 assists and nine digs. Hammer equaled Raymundo's dig total to lead Chapman defensively.

The Pioneers were led offensively by Jasmynne Roberts, who put away 10 kills on 44 swings. Three Pioneers totaled five blocks to lead the defensive effort at the net.

Chapman is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Embry-Riddle in the Hutton Center at 4 p.m.
