Chapman falls to Whittier in four lively sets

 ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's volleyball team fell to Whittier College on Tuesday night at the Hutton Sports Center with three sets coming down to the wire 25-23. Despite winning the first set and playing well throughout, the Panthers fell to Whittier in four sets 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 25-23.

Chapman (7-5 overall, 4-2 SCIAC) battled in set one for a come-from-behind victory 25-23. However, in sets two and three the Panthers closed in on the Poets eight point leads late, and ultimately were unable to catch Whittier in both sets dropping set two 25-19 and set three 25-23. In the final set Chapman took an early lead, but three costly attack errors led to a come-back victory for the Poets 25-23.

Whittier (9-5 overall, 2-3 SCIAC) was led by junior OPP Rebecca Slattery who tallied an impressive 20 kills and four blocks. Senior MB Hayley White recorded 12 kills and six blocks for the Poets, including three blocks in set three.

Senior OH Michele Hammer earned her fifth double-double of the season recording 13 kills and 13 digs for Chapman. Meanwhile, sophomore MB Abby Smith led the Panther defense tallying a team-high of five blocks for 12.5 points. In set's three and four, freshman S Jessica Blum earned four blocks, three kills, and 17 assists for a career-high of 5.5 points. 

The Panthers will travel to No. 6-ranked Cal Lutheran on Friday for a match set at 7:30 p.m. before returning home Saturday, Oct. 3 for a 2 p.m. match set against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
