UC Santa Cruz out-hits Chapman in non-conference match

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University volleyball team lost at home on Sunday afternoon in four sets to visiting UC Santa Cruz 25-21, 26-24, 25-23, 25-15 in a non-conference match at the Hutton Sports Center.

Chapman (8-11 overall) hung close with the Banana Slugs in all four sets, evening the score eight times in the match. The Panthers opened up sets two and four with five point leads, but were unable to maintain their momentum averaging just a .095 hitting percentage on the day. UC Santa Cruz out-hit Chapman in all four sits, maintaining a team average of .208.

 The Panthers narrowed out the 25-23 win in set three with sophomore Jessica Blum collecting a pair of service aces to help Chapman maintain the lead and junior Abby Smith registering three blocks in the set.

Junior OH Kylie Cooke and senior OH Michele Hammer earned double-digit kills with 12 apiece. Smith was a force at the net on Sunday collecting six blocks in the four set match, while sophomore MB Ali Robinson assisted on four of the blocks, while collecting three kills.

The Panthers will return to SCIAC play on Tuesday, Oct. 20 for a match set at 7:30 p.m. at Caltech. Chapman will then return home to host La Verne on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hutton Sports Center.
