Volleyball opens SCIAC slate with sweep of Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University volleyball team quickly swept through Caltech to begin the SCIAC season with a win. Sophomore Jessi Lumsden led the Panthers (8-2, 1-0 SCIAC) with 14 kills and 12 digs in the 25-8, 25-16, 25-22 win.

After falling behind 3-0 to start the match, Chapman rolled off 16 consecutive points to take a commanding lead and set the tone for the rest of the match. The Panthers hit .394 in the set while holding the Beavers (5-5, 1-1 SCIAC) to just four kills on -.100 hitting.

The Panthers broke open the second set early on with five consecutive kills, including back-to-back kills from sophomore Sophie Srivastava. Srivastava ended the match just two kills shy of a triple double with 25 assists, 10 digs and eight kills.

The Beavers surged ahead in the third set and led 16-14 after a block from Dallas Taylor and Helena Shield. Chapman responded by scoring seven of the next nine points to go up 21-18 and kept momentum to secure the sweep.

Freshman libero Cat Helgeson led all players with 23 digs and the Panthers had four total blocks to hold Caltech to .096 hitting in the match.

The Panthers head back out on the road with their six-match winning streak on Tuesday to take on Pomona-Pitzer. The return home Friday to face Occidental at 7 p.m.
