Freshman Quincy nets five goals in Panthers' win over La Verne

ORANGE, Calif.- Freshman Alison Quincy delivered a clutch performance in a key conference matchup as the Chapman University women's water polo team defeated La Verne, 9-5 at the Allred Aquatics Center on Wednesday. The victory improves the Panthers' conference record to 2-2 with just four SCIAC matches remaining.

In the first start of her collegiate career, Quincy scored a career-best five goals including the only three goals scored in the second quarter as she led the Panthers to the SCIAC win. The utility sits just one goal shy of the team lead, held by Samantha Martin who has scored 32 goals this season.

Having dropped two of their last three conference matches, the Panthers looked to get off to a good start against the Leopards. Senior driver Samantha McLaughlin delivered, giving Chapman an early lead with the first goal five minutes into play. La Verne would answer as Alexis Zamora evened the score and Maddie Lovrensky netted a goal in the final seconds to give the Leopards a 2-1 lead.

Quincy took control in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals including the final goal of the half with 47 seconds remaining. Despite the low-scoring affair, the Panthers entered the half with a 4-2 advantage.

After the break, Quincy picked up where she left off as she netted her fourth goal with 7:35 remaining. La Verne's Ryanne Bible would respond four minutes later, snapping the Panthers' 4-0 run.

Quincy led off the fourth quarter with her fifth goal, giving the Panthers a 7-3 advantage with 6:40 remaining in the match. La Verne made a last-ditch effort to take control of the game, scoring twice in the quarter, but late goals from Martin and Miranda Estrella secured the 9-5 victory.

The Panthers will be back in their home tank on Saturday as they play host to visiting Redlands at 11 a.m. The squad will then wrap up their home schedule on Wednesday, April 17 with a matchup against Pomona-Pitzer at 5 p.m.
