Whittier beats Chapman on water polo 'Senior Day'

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell to visiting Whittier College 10-4 in the Panthers' final home game of the season at Allred Pool on Saturday. The No. 3-ranked Poets pulled away in the second half to clinch the No. 3 seed in next weekend's SCIAC Championships.

Clinging to a 5-3 advantage at halftime, Whittier (20-15 overall, 6-2 SCIAC) scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to take a commanding lead. Sophomore A Cynthia Castillo scored two of her game-high three goals in the period to pace the Poets.

Trailing 3-1 in the second quarter, Chapman (9-22 overall, 2-6 SCIAC) rallied to tie the score on goals by freshman 2-meter Emily Fong and junior utility Riley Ford. But Whittier came right back with back-to-back goals to close out the half regaining its two-goal lead.

The Panthers were held scoreless for more than 17 minutes before senior Allison Harf scored on a 2-meter shot to make it 10-4. A four-year member of the Chapman aquatics program, Ford was honored prior to the game as part of 'Senior Day', playing in her final career home game.

Chapman will travel to Whittier College for the SCIAC Championships beginning on Friday, April 25. The Panthers will likely be the No. 7 seed in the nine-team tournament.
