Panthers earn season sweep over Macalester

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team earned a season sweep over Macalester College (Minn.) with Monday afternoons 21-5 victory at Allred Pool. The Panthers defeated Macalester 14-2 on Friday, March 13 just last week at the Cal Baptist Tournament in Riverside.

Chapman jumped on the board first opening up the quarter on a 5-0 run including back-to-back goals by sophomore utility Alexanna Astor to end the first quarter 6-1. The Panthers then went on a 7-2 run in the second quarter to extend its lead 13-3 at the end of the first half. Astor finished the half with a career-high of five goals.

Chapman broke away in the second half on a 5-2 run to extend their lead 18-4 in the third quarter including two goals by sophomore Anna Price. The Panthers finished the match 21-5 allowing just one goal in the last three minutes of the match.  

The Panther defense was led by freshman GK Kerry Goodspeed who finished the game with eight blocks while allowing just five goals and recording three steals.  

Senior Riley Ford and freshman Mary Welton each finished the game with a pair of goals, while sophomore Emily Fong recorded a team-high of four assists for the Panther offense.

The Panthers will travel to Thousand Oaks on Saturday, March 21 for their first SCIAC game of the season against Cal Lutheran beginning at 11 a.m. Chapman will then play its next four games at home beginning with Cal St. East Bay at 10 a.m. and Concordia (Calif.) at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 25 at Allred Pool.
