Spicer moves into second in career blocks, Panthers split a pair

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team split a pair of non-conference games on Monday, falling to Cal State East Bay 6-5 before defeating Concordia 15-11 at the Allred Pool. The Panthers' one-goal loss to East Bay was their fourth loss this season either by a goal or in overtime. Meanwhile, senior goalie Kirsten Spicer ascended the Chapman record books with 20 blocks on Monday.

Game 1: Cal State East Bay 6, Chapman 5

Trailing 5-2 after a scoreless third period from both teams, Chapman staged a comeback with three straight goals by junior Deanna Farley, junior Alison Quincy (her second of the game) and sophomore Lindsey Campbell to tie the game with 2:07 to play. However, Cal State East Bay (9-12) capitalized on a shot clock violation by the Panthers and scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway by Tori Dettloff on the counterattack with 1:13 remaining.

Chapman got the ball back and had one final chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but senior Emily Holmquist's shot was saved by Pioneers goalie Marrina Nation to preserve the win. Spicer made 10 saves for Chapman and allowed just one second-half goal in a tough-luck defeat.

Game 2: Chapman 15, Concordia 11

The Panthers broke open a one-goal game in the fourth quarter, scoring five times in the final period to defeat Concordia for the first time in four meetings. Quincy scored two of her career-high six goals in the frame, including giving Chapman (8-11) its biggest lead of the game at 14-10 with 2:54 to play. Holmquist and senior Riley Ford added three goals apiece and junior Kate Avery scored a goal and added five assists.

Spicer climbed two spots and moved into second place all-time in Chapman history with another 10 saves and now has 510 in her career, just 47 blocks behind Panther career leader Celia Huling (557). Spicer also earned an assist on a breakaway goal by Quincy in the second quarter that gave Chapman a 6-5 lead.

That's a wrap for Chapman in non-conference action as the Panthers resume their SCIAC schedule on Wednesday when they host the University of Redlands on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
