Women's water polo opens season with pair of losses

WHITIER, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team opened its season last weekend but fell to USC and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Panthers lost 24-1 to second-ranked USC and fell 12-9 to CMS in the second match of a doubleheader.

Senior Grace Schade led the Panthers against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with three goals and an assist. Fellow senior Emily Fong had a goal and three assists while five other Panthers also scored a goal in the match.

Chapman built a 5-4 halftime lead against the Athenas but CMS used a 6-2 run in the third quarter to take the lead and matched Chapman in the fourth to come away with the win. Freshman Madeleine Kanzler played the entire match in goal and made 12 saves with a steal.

Senior Emiko Mizusawa scored the Panthers lone goal against USC to start the season.

Chapman returns to the water on Feb. 24 to take on Concordia at 1:30 p.m. before its home-opener against Toronto at 7 p.m.
