Women's water polo drops home-openers

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell in both games of a doubleheader at Allred Pool. Chapman lost 16-7 to CSUN before dropping the night game 11-5 to Toronto.

Game 1 – L, 16-7 vs. CSUN

Freshman Camille Chiang scored another pair of goals but CSUN ran away with the victory as the Panthers faced their third consecutive Division I team to start the season. The Matadors went up 5-1 to start the gam and the Panthers saw the gap continually grow through the game.

After falling behind 5-1 after the first quarter, Chapman had its best quarter in the second with four goals. Freshman Fiona Watkins scored two of the goals in the second quarter while Chiang scored another and another classmate Julia Bridges scored the fourth.

Despite scoring four, CSUN scored six to take an 11-5 lead at halftime. The Panthers found the net just twice in the second half as 20th-ranked CSUN pulled away for the big win.

Game 2 – L, 11-5 vs. Toronto

Sophomore Audrey Hattori scored three goals for the Panthers in the match but the Panthers fell 11-5. They found themselves down 5-1 again after the first quarter after Toronto came out on fire.

Hattori scored Chapman's lone goal of the quarter and scored again in the third and fourth. However, the Panthers managed just one goal in three of the four quarters as the Varsity Blues pulled away for the win.

The Panthers did win the third quarter when they held Toronto to just one goal and sophomore Charlene Ma scored with t15 second left to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Freshman Sophie Salstrom made five saves for Chapman.

The Panthers take a nine-day break before heading up to Thousand Oaks, Calif. for the Tina Finali Tournament Feb. 28-29. First, the Panthers take on Cal Lutheran in a SCIAC contest on Feb. 28 at 11:15 a.m.
