Women's water polo falls 16-11 to Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's water polo team fell 16-11 to visiting Whittier on Wednesday in a SCIAC matchup. Freshman Fiona Watkins scored a pair of goals to go along with four steals.

The Panthers had a slim lead at the end of the first quarter. Neither team had much going offensively on the brisk evening at Allred Pool. Whittier struck first but Watkins evened the score at 1-1 after swimming behind the defense and taking the long pass from freshman Sophie Salstrom. Senior Kylie Beloian gave Chapman a 2-1 lead later in the first.

Whittier again struck first in the second quarter but freshman Camille Chiang put the Panthers right back on top. The Poets' attack found its groove near the midway point of the second as Whittier ended the half on a 5-0 run, including a buzzer beating shot from Sawyer Belville.

The run continued into the third as the Poets scored seven consecutive goals to go up 9-3. The Panthers responded and matched the Poets with three goal in the quarter. As hard as it was to come by goals in the first, they seemed to flow freely in the fourth. The teams combined for 11 goals with Whittier outscoring Chapman 6-5 in the final period to secure the win.

Beloian and junior Ally Long each contributed two goals while Chiang added four assists to her goal.

The Panthers head to the Claremont Convergence this weekend before returning to Allred Pool on Mar. 9 to take on Connecticut College.
