Reece demolishes another school record

POMONA, Calif. – Freshman Arabella Reece continued to shatter Chapman University cross country records in her college debut. The rookie out of Murrieta, Calif. set the new school record in the women's 6k race earlier this morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite.

Reece is no stranger to breaking school records. In her first race as a Panther, she obliterated the 5k record. Just one week later, she beat her own record to set the new school best. This week, she bested the previous Chapman record by over 30 seconds to place fourth overall at the race. Reece finished with a time of 22:24.7, beating Sara Wanous' record of 22:56.2 set back in 2013.

Sophomore Emma Eglinton was the next Panther to finish, crossing the finish line at 24:21.7 for a 39th place finish. Senior Mia Hernandez was next, coming in with a time of 25:04.3. Senior Nika Cokas broke across the finish line at a time of 25:33.8 for a 57th place finish.

Sophomores Montana Jelden and Ryly Yee rounded out the women's 6k race for the Panthers. Jelden finished with a time of 26.47.1 while Yee came in a few minutes behind at 29:01.4. The women placed ninth overall, coming out on top of two fellow SCIAC schools.

"On the women's side Arabella made a great transition from the 5k to the 6k. She lead our ladies well with a new school record and now being ranked in the top 10 of the SCIAC," said head coach DeAndra'e Woods. "Our middle pack of Emma, Nika and Mia brought a lot of grit to today's race. Our number 5 Montana is improving throughout the season."

On the men' side, junior Drake Butler led the pack in the 8k race, taking a 39th place finish with a time of 28:07.1. The next four Panthers to cross the finish line did so within 20 seconds of each other. Freshman Eli Haas was the first to cross with a time of 28:30.1. Fellow freshman Enrique Brenes was just nine seconds behind Haas at 28:39.9.

Freshman Ben Clark finished exactly one second after Brenes with a time of 28:40.9, while senior Jonah Soltes rounded out the group finish at 28:49.4.

The final trio of runners for the Panthers finished in similar fashion, crossing the line one right after the other within a time span of 20 seconds. Freshman Davis Carmichael les the pack, finishing with a time of 30:20.2. Freshman Jose Guerrero and senior Sayeed Mohammed were right behind him, with Guerrero finishing at 30:29.1 and Mohammed at 30:40.5.

"Our men did a good job this morning. Our middle pack pushed each other this morning and we believe that's why we are improving. They loved the Pomona Pitzer course," commented coach Woods.
