Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Chapman Athletics: Inclusion Matters

Chapman University Athletics is deeply committed to enriching diversity, equity, and inclusion through on-going efforts to cultivate a welcoming climate for all members of the Chapman Athletics community. We strive to provide an inclusive student-athlete experience and promote equity and access in recruitment and retention. It is our conviction that an inclusive athletic experience supplements and reinforces the comprehensive education which Chapman University strives to provide.

At Chapman the term diversity implies a respect for all and an understanding of individual differences including race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, marital status, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, sexual orientation, military or veteran status, genetic information and any other characteristic protected by applicable state or federal law, so that all members of the community are treated at all times with dignity and respect.

Statement in Support of Transgender Participation in Athletics

The Department of Athletics supports transgender participation in sports and athletic activities at Chapman University. According to the NCAA:

The advantages of competing in college sports are both immediate and lifelong. Participating in college sports provides opportunities to learn, compete and succeed. Student-athletes receive top-notch academic support, quality medical care and regular access to outstanding coaching, facilities and equipment. Student-athletes as a group graduate at higher rates than their peers in the general student body and feel better prepared for life after college.

Our position is in full agreement and alignment with the NCAA Board of Governors Statement on Transgender Participation. Our commitment is to provide access for all who choose to participate. More than 500 Chapman Panthers participate in our Division III athletic teams, clubs and intramural activities. Inclusion matters, and we are proud to provide the long-term, valuable benefits of athletic competition to all students who choose to participate at Chapman.
