Men's basketball defeats the Slugs at home

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team defeated the University of California, Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 85-67 in their third straight win of the 2021-22 season. Nathan Williams led the scoring effort for the Panthers serving 16 points on the night.

Jack Roggin set the tone in the first half and scored the first seven points of the game for Chapman. The Panthers pulled ahead early and secured a 14-7 lead less than ten minutes in off of a made three-pointer from Jacob Mata. Mata tallied 12 points for the Panthers off the bench and went 2-3 on three-point attempts. Chapman went into the half up 43-32.

Williams secured the momentum for the Panthers moving into the second and posted the first ten points for Chapman. A Williams layup started a run just two minutes into the second, he secured a shot from behind the arc, one of this two on the night, a minute later to put Chapman up 51-34. With one minute remaining a Kobe Kiener layup, the first of his Chapman career, made it a 20-point game that sent the Panthers into another victory at home.

Alex Rogat secured seven rebounds for Chapman on the night alongside his five assists and seven points. Hayden Moore tallied 13 points on the night increasing his season team scoring lead, he is averaging 16 points per game after three games. Anthony Giomi notched another 14 points alongside Roggin's 12.

Tyler Kessinger led the scoring effort for the Banana Slugs and served 18 points, he made seven of 11 shots from the field. Avri Finch secured five rebounds for Santa Cruz.

The Panthers are back home on Tues., Nov. 23 to host Whitman in the Hutton Sports Center at 7 p.m. They hit the road on Nov. 26 to face the Banana Slugs for the second time in at UCSC.
