Smith earns SCIAC Defensive of the Week

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Anthony Smith was named the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week after helping the Chapman men's basketball team to a 3-0 week. Smith is the second Chapman player to earn the award this season.

After not playing a game for nearly one month, the Panthers played four games in eight days and rebounded from a Jan. 15 loss with three consecutive wins last week. Chapman held Redlands and Caltech to less than 65 points in double digit victories to bookend the week.

Smith came away with a pair of steals and led the squad with three blocked shots. He also averaged five rebounds per game to go along with his 14.7 points per game.

The Panthers' defense held opponents to just 35 percent shooting last week. With Smith often drawing a tough defensive assignment on the wing, Chapman's opponents made just 30 percent of their three-point attempts.

The Panthers are back in action at Hutton Sports Center on Wednesday to take on Whittier.
