Three-goal rally stuns Panthers in 3-2 loss to Bethesda

ORANGE, Calif. – A three-goal outburst in the second half by visiting Bethesda Christian University stunned the Chapman University men's soccer team and handed the Panthers a 3-2 defeat at Wilson Field on Saturday night. The loss was Chapman's first home loss of the season and dropped the Panthers to 3-1-1 at Wilson Field.

Bethesda's Jose Lopez scored the game-winner with a shot to the upper-right corner of the net from about 20 yards out. The decisive goal snapped a 2-2 tie in the 74th minute of play and completed the comeback for Bethesda.

Chapman (7-6-1) built a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to a pair of goals from freshman F Nick Echeverry. The first goal came in the 13th minute as senior M Dalton Sweaney dribbled in from the left-hand side before passing the ball off to Echeverry who completed the two-on-one with a shot past Bethesda GK Hyeokjin Choi.

Echeverry scored again 17 minutes later to give the Panthers a comfortable 2-0 lead. The goal was the rookie's team-leading sixth of the season. He also leads Chapman with 16 points.

Bethesda began its second-half rally in the 50th minute on the first of two goals from F Cheunyong Park, who got beyond the Chapman backline for a breakaway and beat Panthers' senior GK Tyler Hadzinsky. Park scored a second time in the 68th minute to tie the game at 2-2 with a groundball shot just past a diving Hadzinsky into the lower-right corner.

Chapman had several scoring opportunities in the closing minutes, including three corner kicks in the final 2 minutes, but could not send the game to overtime.

The Panthers out-shot Bethesda 28-9 in the game. Bethesda Christian took just five shots in the second half, scoring on three of them.
