Unbeaten streak snapped at four for men's soccer

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's soccer held the run of the game but fell 1-0 to visiting La Verne on Saturday at Wilson Field. La Verne scored in the final five minutes to stay in second place in the SCIAC standings.

The stat sheet was filled up by the Panthers (9-4-2, 6-4-2 SCIAC) except for the most crucial stats. Chapman held a 17-6 shot advantage and took eight corner kicks to La Verne's one. However, it was the Leopards that made the most of a scoring opportunity and found the back of the net.

La Verne's Briley Venti was able to win a ball in the box and find his teammate Justin Funes alone near the left post for a nearly point blank shot. Dacko buried the shot with just under five minutes left in the match.

The majority of the match was played in Chapman's attacking half. Junior Elliott Braund nearly put the Panthers up in the first half but his header went off the crossbar, bounced straight down and was swept off the line. Senior Daniel Malikyar also appeared to give the Panthers a lead in the second half. He ran on to a ball played over the top of the defense and beat the keeper but was immediately called offsides, erasing the goal.

Junior Sean Augustine made one point blank save in the first half that kept the match scoreless. He made a strong, diving play on a well-struck shot.

Chapman continues a tough stretch of matches with a trip to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday and returns home Saturday for a 1 p.m. match with SCIAC-leading Redlands.
