Chapman men still alive, reach Round of 16

OJAI, Calif. -  Chapman University men's tennis players Clifford Yook and Christian Isip have each advanced to the Round of 16 at the 109th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament with singles victories on Friday. Both Panthers will try to reach the quarterfinals on Saturday with matches at 9 a.m. in Ojai.

Yook entered the Division III singles bracket as the No. 7 seed and earned a first round bye as a result. The senior then defeated Cal Lutheran University's Ryan Lassila in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 on Friday afternoon. Yook advances to Saturday's Round of 16 where he will face Linfield College's Mark Magdaong.

Meanwhile, Isip is one of just three unseeded players left in the field. The junior earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Whitman College's Dan Wilson in the opening round and then served up an upset special against No. 9-seeded Cameron Spearman from the University of Redlands, 7-6, 6-1 in the Round of 32.

Isip will try to keep it going on Saturday as he faces No. 4-seed Andrew Giuffrida of Cal Lutheran. Giuffrida owns two singles wins against Chapman this year, both against Yook from the No. 1 position.

Yook and Isip will team up in their first doubles match of the tournament on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. The unseeded Panthers are scheduled to face No. 6-seed Robbie Erani and Ronald Wu from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
