Singles rally gives men's tennis back-to-back wins
ORANGE, Calif. – Despite losing all three doubles matches to open play against visiting University of the South (Tenn.), the Chapman University men’s tennis team rallied to win five of the six singles matches to earn a 5-4 victory on Wednesday at the Chapman Tennis Courts.
The win gives the Panthers back-to-back wins for the first time this season and it’s their third victory in four matches after opening the season 0-5.
Freshman No. 1 player Dylan Tevlin began singles play with a straight sets win over South’s Jeff Lepley, 6-1, 6-2 and junior Christian Isip also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 position for Chapman (3-6).
But it was sophomore Alex Klein and junior Tyler McCusker that provided the dramatics for the Panthers in the one-point win. Klein gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead in the No. 4 match, rallying from a 3-6 loss in the first set to win 6-3 and 7-5 in the final two sets.
Then, with the match tied 4-4 and the No. 6 duel tied at one set each, McCusker shutout Levi Joy in the third set and won the clincher 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
