Doubles trouble: Pairs struggle as Chapman loses two

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University men's tennis team dropped back-to-back home matches losing Sunday to the University of Texas-Tyler 7-2, followed by a 6-3 defeat against Sewanee (Ga.) on Tuesday afternoon at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The Panthers have now lost four of their past five matches and fell to 2-4 at home this season. Chapman's doubles teams dropped all six decisions in the two matches and fell to 4-11 in doubles play in their past five matches.

Texas-Tyler 7, Chapman 2
Tyler controlled this matchup for most of the day. Along with a sweep in doubles play, the Patriots took four of the six singles matches, including straight set victories from their Nos. 1 and 2 seeds. All four bottom seeds were drawn out to third sets as the Panthers were able to salvage two victories from the bunch. The first came from senior third seed Giovanni Villicana who beat Tyler junior Adam Chirhart 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Chapman junior Alex Klein's impressive season continued with a come-from-behind victory over senior Chayce Stone 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Sewanee 6, Chapman 3
Once again, the Panthers found themselves having to play catch-up as their doubles troubles mounted. The Tigers swept all three of the pairs matches including a tough 9-7 loss in the top-seeded match between Chapman's freshman duo Andre Herd and Chris Williams and Sewanee's Jay Hill and Levi Joy.

Chapman earned a split in singles thanks to straight-set victories from sophomore Dylan Tevlin (6-4, 6-2), Williams (6-2, 6-2), and again from Klein (6-3, 6-4) who improved to 4-1 in singles play this season. The junior has been an anchor for the Panthers at the fifth and sixth seed only losing one match all year.
