Men's Tennis opens season with decisive victory

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's tennis team won its season opener at the Chapman Tennis Courts on Friday, sweeping all three of its doubles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over Hope International.

The match got off to a strong start for Chapman (1-0) with decisive victories from each of their three pairs. The Panthers' No. 1 duo of Troy Akin and Brett Buford cruised to an 8-1 win, a score matched by Kyle Coates and Chris Williams in the No. 2 match. Nick Mulflur and Eric Wilson completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win on the No. 3 court.

The Panthers strong start carried over into singles play, where they won five of six matches.  Akin, Buford, Mulfur, Williams and Sam Farzani each won in straight sets. The only loss on the day came on the No. 1 court, where Coates lost to the Royals' J.D. Owens in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.

The Panthers' unblemished record would not last long, as they lost at Cal Lutheran on Saturday in their first SCIAC match of the season. The 8-1 defeat featured a sweep in doubles competition with the sole victory of the day coming from Farzani, who handed a three-set loss to Cal Lu's Branko Andrews, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the No. 6 match.

Chapman will be back in action on Feb. 14 at Biola and will return to Orange for their next home match on Feb.21 to face Brandeis University.
