Farzani continues strong play, clinching non-conference win for Panthers
ORANGE, Calif.- Sam Farzani clinched a 5-4 victory for the Chapman University men's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted regionally ranked no. 8 Haverford College at the Chapman Tennis Courts. Farzani, who won in straight-sets from the No. 6 position, has opened the season at 4-1 for the regionally ranked No. 14 Panthers.
While the two teams split six singles matches, the difference was made in doubles play. Sophomore Kyle Coates and junior Chris Williams took down their opponents from the No. 2 position by a score of 8-1. The duo of freshman Nick Mulflur and sophomore Eric Wilson earned the Panthers an 8-4 victory from the No. 3 position to give Chapman the advantage. The victories gave each pair a three-game win streak, boosting their records to 4-1.
In singles play, there were no upsets in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, with Haverford's Kevin Caulfield and Luis Acaba (who rank sixth and seventeenth in their region, respectively) defeated Coates and Troy Akin. Brett Buford and Mulflur secured straight set victories over their opponents before Farzani won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the overall win for the Panthers.
Chapman will play the third of six straight non-conference home matches against Case Western Reserve on March 14 at 2:00 p.m.
