No. 12 Case Western shuts out men's tennis

ORANGE, Calif. – The up-and-down early season for the Chapman University men's tennis team continued with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Division III's No. 12-ranked Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) on Thursday in a non-conference matchup at the Chapman Tennis Courts.

The Panthers have alternated wins and losses through the first six matches for a break-even 3-3 overall mark. Chapman will play three more non-conference matches this week before rejoining the SCIAC schedule on Friday, March 22.

The No. 12-ranked Spartans had little trouble cutting their way through the Chapman lineup, earning straight sets victories in all six singles matches. Sophomore Sam Farzani lost for just the second time in six matches this season, falling to Harrison Smith on the No. 6 court 6-1, 6-4. Chapman freshman Brett Buford fell to 3-3 this spring with a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss from the No. 3 position to Derek Reinbold. Three Case Western (13-3) singles players were all ranked in the top-20 in the Central Region.

Chapman's No. 2 doubles team sophomore Kyle Coates and junior Chris Williams had won four out of five matches heading into Thursday, but fell by a score of 8-5 to Kyle Gerber and Alex Solove from Case.

The Panthers return to the court on Saturday to host the University of Rochester at the Chapman Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
