Struggles against east coast opponents continue for men's tennis

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University men's tennis team saw its woes continue as losses to the University of Rochester (N.Y.) and Tufts University (Mass.) brought them to 3-5 on the season and 2-4 at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The two losses are a part of a six-match string versus east coast teams, in which they are currently 1-4.

Saturday, vs. University of Rochester (N.Y.)

A sweep in doubles competition clinched the victory for the visiting YellowJackets Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the Panthers 6-3. Despite splitting the singles at 3-3, Chapman was unable to gain an advantage as they fell in doubles 9-8, 8-5, and 8-6.

Chris Williams and Brett Buford collected straight-set wins for Chapman in singles play. Williams defeated Joe Allen in straight sets at 6-2 and 7-6 to improve to 4-3 on the season, while Buford almost shutout Ben Shapiro with scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Sophomore Kyle Coates collected the third singles win for Chapman, defeating Julian Danko in three sets. Coates dropped the first set 2-6, but came back to win the following two, 6-4 and 6-3.

The regionally ranked No. 19 YellowJackets win over Chapman ended a five-match west coast trip in which they finished 2-5.

Tuesday, vs. Tufts University (Mass.)

No. 9 Tufts University entered Tuesday's match undefeated in three matches and continued their success with a 7-2 win over Chapman. The Panthers were unable to string together victories, losing to the Jumbos in singles, 5-1 and doubles, 2-1.

Nick Mulflur earned the sole victory in singles for the Panthers to improve his record to 3-4 on the season, defeating Andrew Lutz in three sets. Despite allowing Lutz to break even, Mulfur came back in the third set to win in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-2).

Chapman's lone doubles victory came from Buford and Troy Akin as they defeated the Jumbos' Ben Barad and Rob Jacobson, 8-4.

The Panthers will be back out on their home courts on Thursday as they play host to Amherst before welcoming SCIAC opponent Redlands on Friday.
