Mixed results for Chapman Tennis at Ojai Tourney

ORANGE, Calif. – A pair of singles wins for the Panther men and the women's doubles team reaching the quarterfinals highlighted an otherwise quiet weekend for Chapman University at the 113th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament.

The tournament, which in the past has signaled the conclusion of the regular season for Chapman tennis teams, precedes the SCIAC Championships which begin on Friday for the Panther men and women.

Junior Troy Akin and sophomore Kyle Coates each opened the tournament in fine fashion, earning straight sets wins in the Round of 64 in the Division III Men's bracket on Friday. Both then suffered tough losses to familiar SCIAC foes in the Round of 32 as Akin lost to Patrick Lipscomb from the University of Redlands 7-6, 6-3 – similar to his 7-6, 6-0 loss to Lipscomb back in March.

Coates lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Alex Lane also in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6. The two of them met just two weeks prior in Claremont with similar results. The sophomore finished the season with a 7-13 record, including a 2-2 mark in tournament play.

Junior Chris Williams and Coates partnered for a first round (of 32) win in the Division III Doubles bracket, defeating George Fox University's Peter Brown and Chris Lilley 8-2, before losing to a team from UC Santa Cruz in the Round of 16.

For a second straight year, the women's team sent a doubles team to the quarterfinals, but the duo of Andrea Hammer and Kelley Klebenow would provide the only Ojai Tournament win for the women. Hammer and Klebenow defeated SCIAC foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-6, 6-3 before falling in the quarterfinals to a duo from nationally ranked UC Santa Cruz, 6-2, 6-0.

The duo played in 11 matches together this season, posting a 4-8 record that includes a 2-2 mark in tournament play.

Hammer, Klebenow and Sophia Duong were ousted quickly in singles play, each losing in straight sets. Chapman's No. 1 player for most of the season, Hammer came closest to stealing a victory as she lost 6-4, 6-3 to La Verne opponent Laina Matsuda.

The teams will conclude the season at the SCIAC Championships, taking place May 3-4 in Pasadena.
