Men's tennis closes the season in seventh in SCIAC

ORANGE, Calif. – A second-round win by the Chapman University men's tennis team highlighted the Panthers' season-ending appearance at the SCIAC Championships over the weekend. Chapman (7-13 overall, 2-8 SCIAC) sandwiched losses to nationally-ranked Cal Lutheran University and host Whittier College around a win over Occidental College to place sixth overall in the tournament and seventh overall in the SCIAC standings.

Match 1: Cal Lutheran 5, Chapman 0

Following a clean sweep in doubles play by the No. 5-ranked Kingsmen, they made quick work of the top two seeds in singles play to clinch the match. Cal Lutheran's Nicholas Ballou handed Chapman junior Troy Akin a 6-0, 6-3 loss on the No. 1 court and sophomore Kyle Coates was the next domino to fall in the second seeded match, 6-2, 6-2 to Ray Worley from Cal Lu. Chapman trailed in all other singles matches when the victory was decided for the Kingsmen, which went on to place second in the tournament to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Match 2: Chapman 5, Occidental 4

Chapman's bottom four singles rallied for wins – all in straight sets – as the Panthers came from behind to defeat the Tigers 5-4 after falling behind 2-1 after doubles. Led by freshmen Brett Buford and Nick Mulflur from the Nos. 3 and 4 positions, Chapman claimed four of the six singles courts to advance to the fifth place match. The win also avenged an 8-1 loss to Occidental just two weeks earlier.

Buford's 6-4, 6-0 win over Oxy's Kevin Siebs gave the rookie a team-leading eight singles wins (8-11) this season. Meanwhile, sophomore Sam Farzani on the No. 5 court for the Panthers equaled Buford with his eighth singles win (8-6) of the year, 7-5, 6-4 over David Cotton. It was also Farzani's third win in SCIAC play – a Chapman high.

Match 3: Whittier 9, Chapman 0

The Panthers were shutout in the fifth place match by No. 19 Whittier to close out the season. Chapman was forced out in straight sets throughout the lineup. The Panthers' No. 2 doubles team of Coates and junior Chris Williams lost 8-1 to fall to 8-12 overall as a duo. Their eight wins was also tops for Chapman in 2013.
