Softball opens SCIAC play with convincing wins

ORANGE, Calif. — Softball combined for 21 runs Saturday, Mar. 4 at El Camino Park across the two games of the double header to defeat the Occidental Tigers 13-4 and 8-0 in five innings each game.

Game 1

The Chapman bats came out swinging, scoring four runs in each of the first three innings. Grace Fosselman got things going, driving in the first run via a double in the left-center gap.

Occidental would answer with three runs in the top of the second, but Illiana Serna and Taylor Corcoran had something to say as the pair notched a double and triple respectively driving in three of the four second inning runs. Corcoran would end the game three-for-three with three RBI.

Jillian Kelly pitched the first four innings in the circle striking out six surrendering the four earned runs. Simi Lauwers finished off the game with a quick one-two-three inning to seal the first victory.

Game 2

The Panthers' pitching was lights out in the night cap with Lauwers and Rose Malen tag-teaming a two-hit, no-run performance in the circle.

Offensively, Fosselman kept it rolling at the dish going, 2-for-2 driving and in a run to end the day 4-for-5 with two RBI.

Chapman walked-off the run-ruled victory as Gracie Rose notched her first hit of the season to bring home pinch-runner Kristy Kitabayashi to score the decisive eighth run.

The Panthers improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play with the victories and will return to action on Monday against WPI in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at El Camino.
