Strand, McPherson recognized on All-SCIAC Teams

ORANGE, Calif. – Two seniors landed All-SCIAC honors after leading the Chapman University women's basketball team to a second-place finish. Senior Julia Strand was selected to the First Team while teammate Brittney McPherson was voted on to the Second Team. The teams are selected by a vote of the nine SCIAC coaches.

Strand is having a season that will live on in the record books for years to come and was rewarded with her first career All-SCIAC recognition. She finished the regular season leading the SCIAC in scoring and rebounding. She averaged 22.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game in 13 SCIAC games this season after turning from an injury that kept her out for the first three games. She was the only player in the conference to average over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in the conference and scored in double digits in every game she played this season.

Her seven double-doubles in SCIAC games led the conference as well. Strand also contributed 24 assists on the offensive end while blocking 17 shots on the defensive end and coming away with 22 steals. She ranked 10th in the conference with a 43.3 field goal percentage and ranked eighth while shooting 74.4 percent from the free throw line.

McPherson also earned her first All-SCIAC honor after putting up career-best numbers in 2021-22. This season, McPherson had career-best averages in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals while having a career-low umber of turnovers. In SCIAC games, she ranked second in the conference with 41 steals and also ranked second with 59 assists. She averaged 10.8 points per game in the SCIAC season and ranked 11th with seven rebounds per game.

With Strand and McPherson leading the way, the Panthers finished second in the SCIAC standings and will be the No. 2 seed in the expanded SCIAC Tournament that starts today. Chapman will host seventh-seeded La Verne at 7 p.m. in the Hutton Sports Center.
