Women's lacrosse cruises in season-opener

ORNAGE, Calif. – A record-breaking night officially kicked off the 2023 season for the Chapman University women's lacrosse team. The Panthers broke the school record for goals scored in a 27-1 win over visiting Eastern Oregon.

In total, 15 different Panthers tallied at least one goal in the rout of the Mountaineers. Elise Mayer and Annika Carlson topped the total team effort with three goals apiece. Mei-Lani Ferreira, Sophie Bitis and Jessica Ricketts each scored twice and assisted on two more.

It took just 16 seconds for the Panthers to score off the opening draw. Megan Guerra converted a free-position shot to put the Panthers on top and open the flood gates. Just three minutes into the game, Chapman had opened up a 5-0 lead. It reached double digits just eight minutes in and the Panthers continued to cruise.

Chapman scored 13 goals in the opening quarter and the first 24 goals of the game before Eastern Oregon scored on their first and only shot of the match – a free position opportunity with 10:03 left in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers won 22 draw controls and outshot the Mountaineers 36-1. They forced 15 turnovers from the visitors and converted all seven clear attempts.

The Panthers jump into the first part of the SCIAC schedule on Feb. 22 at Redlands before returning home on Mar. 1 to take on Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m.
