Chapman beats Santa Cruz, earns second shutout of the year

ORANGE, Calif. - Sophomore No. 1 Liz Lewis won for the 11th time in 12 singles matches to lead the Chapman University women's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over visiting U.C. Santa Cruz on Friday at the Chapman Tennis Courts.

The win was Chapman's third straight - its second such winning streak this season - and the Panthers improved to 6-3 on their home courts this year.

Lewis, ranked No. 22 in Division III was challenged in the first set, but claimed a 7-5 win before cruising in the second set 6-1. Sophomore Kelley Fox won in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, (10-0) from the No. 2 position for her fifth consecutive singles win.

In addition, Fox and Lewis improved to 10-3 in doubles play this spring with an 8-3 victory over Santa Cruz's Kyla Rowe and Taylor Mannix. Fox and Lewis remain ranked No. 23 in the nation in doubles.

No. 3 player, junior Manon Pochet won her sixth consecutive singles match, coming back from a first set loss to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Pochet and freshman Cassady Sirois also earned an 8-3 doubles win from the No. 2 spot to help Chapman (8-5) complete the shutout.
