NCAA women's draws: An underdog and a rematch

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -  The NCAA Division III women's tennis championships committee has announced the singles and doubles draws for the finals tournaments which begin on Friday at the Collins Athletic Club. Chapman University doubles' team of sophomores Kelley Fox and Liz Lewis will be underdogs right out of the gate as they must face the tournament's No. 2 seed, Julie Browne and Meghan McCooey from Tufts University (Mass.) at 3 p.m. (EDT) on Friday.

Fox and Lewis are ranked No. 3 in the West and currently 21-6 overall. The duo is coming off a berth in the semifinals at last month's Ojai Tournament and also placed third at last fall's Small Colllege Championships - a tournament where Browne and McCooey took first. The two teams have not faced each other.

Meanwhile, Lewis will face Amanda Wu from Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) in the singles bracket Round of 32 on Friday at 9 a.m. The first round matchup will be a rematch from March, when the Tartans visited Orange on their spring break. Although Carnegie Mellon won the dual match, Lewis claimed the No. 1 singles match in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) over Wu.

The winner of the Lewis-Wu match will then have to face the winner of Amherst College's Brittany Berckles and Washington and Lee University's Katie Tabb. Tabb is the No. 7 seed in the tournament.

Lewis (22-4) is one victory away from tying Chapman's all-time career wins record. She is currently 41-11 in her career. Yetee Osunsanmi holds the Panthers' career win mark with 42 singles victories from 1998-01.
