Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament Update
OJAI, Calif. – Junior Liz Lewis is the last Chapman University tennis player left in contention at the 110th annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament, as she advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Independent Singles Tournament. After defeating Jordan Kimura of Concordia University on Thursday 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, Lewis took care of Azusa Pacific’s Leah Hoffee in straight sets on Friday 6-2, 6-3.
Lewis, the No. 5 seed, now faces fourth-seeded Sara
Celma of Fresno Pacific University, Saturday at 9:30 for
the right to play in the semifinals. If Lewis advances, she will
most likely face top-seeded Kristin Strimple of
Point Loma Nazarene University later in the day at 12:30 p.m. The
finals then are on Sunday at 8 a.m.
Also in the Women’s Independent Singles Tournament for
Chapman, junior Kelley Fox advanced to the round
of 32 by winning her first match on Thursday, beating
Lauren Gelgur of Whittier College 6-0, 6-2. Fox
was then eliminated on Friday, losing 6-1, 6-0 to No. 7 seed
Sheryl Bon of Azusa Pacific.
In the Women’s Independent Doubles Tournament, fourth-seeded Lewis and Fox were upset by the seventh-seeded duo of Katie Eng and Verena Preikschas from California State University, Stanislaus 3-6, 6-1, 10-2.
On the men’s side, both Christian Isip and Dylan Tevlin have been eliminated from the tournament. After winning their first match in the Men’s Division III Doubles Tournament on Friday, 8-1, against Spencer Choy and Stephen Perkins of Occidental College, the two were eliminated a few hours later by No. 6 Linfield College.
Early Friday morning, Isip and Tevlin were both defeated in the first round of the Men’s Division III Singles Tournament.
