Fall Regionals offers sneak peak of tennis season

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's tennis teams hit the courts for the first time this year with mixed results in the USTA/ITA Small Colleges Division III Fall Regional Tournament held at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges over the weekend. Freshman Andrea Hammer led Chapman with a pair of wins in the women's singles main draw to reach the Round of 16 in the annual offseason event.

Sophomore Sophia Duong, who earned a No. 4 seed in her bracket entering the tournament, was upset in the Round of 32 after a first-round victory. Meanwhile, junior Kelley Klebenow rebounded from a disappointing first-round loss to reach the quarterfinals in the women's consolation bracket with a couple of straight-set wins.

Duong and Hammer also teamed up to reach the quarterfinals in the main doubles bracket.

On the men's side, no Panther advanced past the first round in the main draw. However, freshman Brett Buford and sophomore Kyle Coates each earned wins in the consolation bracket to advance to the Round of 16. Buford and senior Dylan Tevlin also reached the Round of 16 in the doubles main bracket.

The annual event helps establish team and individual rankings for the upcoming spring season which begins in February 2013.
