Mixed results for women's tennis during busy weekend

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women's tennis team earned mixed results with a pair of home dual matches over the weekend. First, the Panthers defeated visiting Occidental College 9-0 on Saturday at Anaheim Hills Racquet Club and then lost 9-0 to No. 12-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday at the Chapman Tennis Courts.

In the Panthers' second SCIAC match of the season, they picked up their second win and first shutout of the year. Each of Chapman's Nos. 3 through 6 seeds won in straight sets, only surrendering a total of five games combined. In the No. 3 position, senior Genna Ford improved to 4-1 this spring with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Meanwhile junior Kelley Klebenow won her fifth straight match from the No. 4 position 6-1, 6-0.

Ford and doubles partner sophomore Sophia Duong made quick work of the Tigers on Court #2 with an 8-1 win for their first victory together this year.

Washington 9, Chapman 0

The roles were reversed less than 24 hours later as Chapman found itself the victim of a shutout at the hands of the nationally-ranked Bears. Ford and Klebenow each had their winning streaks snapped and Chapman fell to 2-4 overall. Ford put up a good fight on the No. 3 court, rallying after a first set loss to win the second 6-4, but lost the third in a tiebreak format 10-3.

Washington carried all the momentum after three closely-contested doubles matches went its way. The Bears won on each of the first two courts 8-6 before Betsy Edershile and Jamie Silverberg outlasted the Panthers' senior Arielle Kubetschek and junior Madison Mathis 9-8 (7-5) in a heartbreaker for Chapman.

No rest for the Panthers as they return to the courts on Monday night against regional foe Texas-Tyler under the lights at the Chapman Tennis Courts at 7 p.m.
