Hammer, Duong score upsets in Panthers' win over Texas-Tyler

ORANGE, Calif.- The Chapman University women's tennis team earned a decisive 7-2 victory over No. 9 Texas-Tyler on Tuesday evening at the Chapman Tennis Courts. The match featured a pair of upsets against two regionally ranked singles with freshman Andrea Hammer and sophomore Sophia Duong defeating Tyler's Amy Friesenhahn (#15) and Jessica Blundell (#16).

The fourth-ranked Panthers won five of six singles matches, including straight-set victories from Hammer, senior Genna Ford and junior Kelley Klebenow. Klebenow's win from the No. 4 position improved her season record to a team-best 8-3, including a 6-1 mark in dual matches.

In the doubles competition, Hammer and Klebenow upset the fifth ranked pair of Freisenhahn and Rachel Cole with a resounding 8-1 victory to improve their duo record to 2-1. In the No. 2 doubles match, Duong and Ford battled for a 9-8 win over Tyler's Blundell and Jessica Payne.

The win brings the No. 4 Panthers record to 3-4 with an even .500 winning percentage (2-2) against regionally ranked teams. Chapman will look to improve upon its 2-0 conference record on Friday at La Verne with the SCIAC-match set to start at 2 p.m.
