Tennis struggles continue for men and women against Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif.- Looking to snap their respective losing streaks, the Chapman University men's and women's tennis teams both came up short to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. The men's team extended their losing streak to three matches, suffering a 9-0 shutout at the Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont while the women lost their fifth straight, an 8-1 decision at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.

Women's Tennis: Pomona-Pitzer 8, Chapman 1

Senior Genna Ford improved her conference singles record to 4-2 with a win over Sammy Chao as the Panthers narrowly avoided a shutout in their SCIAC showdown with the No. 22 ranked Sagehens. Ford's victory from the No. 3 position was the only matchup that went to three sets, as she won 7-6, 5-7, 10-3.

Despite being swept in doubles play, the Panthers pushed the Sagehens in closely contested matches.  The No. 1 duo of Andrea Hammer and Kelley Klebenow lost to Pomona-Pitzer's top duo of Jamie Solomon and Marie Fleming by a score of 8-5. On the No. 2 court, Ford and Sophia Duong were edged out by their Sagehen counterparts, 8-6.

The Panthers will look to snap their losing streak on Friday as they travel to Caltech to take on the Beavers in their final SCIAC match of the season.

Men's Tennis: Pomona-Pitzer 9, Chapman 0

The men's tennis team saw its SCIAC troubles continue on Saturday, suffering its second straight shutout and fifth straight conference loss. The nationally ranked No. 22 Sagehens delivered Chapman its fifth shutout of the season.

The Panthers were swept in singles play, with all six matches decided in straight sets. Troy Akin competed from the No. 1 position, losing to Max Sabel, 6-3, 7-5. Kyle Coates suffered a similar fate, losing to Chris Wiechert, 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 2 position. Brett Buford, who entered the match with a 6-9 record from the No. 3 position, lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

It was more of the same for the men in doubles competition as the No. 1 duo of Buford and Akin lost to Sabel and Frankie Allinson, 8-2. Coates and Chris Williams played as the No. 2 duo, dropping an 8-2 decision. Zach Resnick and Nick Mulflur rounded out the doubles teams, losing to Wiechert and Kevin Wei, 8-3.

The Panthers have two SCIAC matches remaining before the Ojai Tournament, April 26-28. The men's team will play host to Caltech at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club on Friday before traveling up to Occidental for the final regular season match on Sunday.
