Volleyball sweeps Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – A home sweep of Redlands put the Chapman University volleyball team back on the winning track. Senior Jessi Lumsden led the charge with 16 kills in the 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 win.

Lumsden hit .364 in the match to go along with seven digs, one block and a pair of aces. Junior Leighton Gagnon added in eight kills on .263 hitting and freshman Annika Ruud put down five kills on just nine swings.

Senior Sophie Srivastava had 20 assists to go along with 10 digs and junior Cat Helgeson had 29 digs in the sweep. Helgeson is just 11 digs shy of becoming just the fifth Panther to record 1,000 career digs.

The Panthers battled through the first set but scored the last four points of the set to turn a 21-21 tie into a 25-21 win. Lumsden slammed down a kill to break the tie and another on set point. Helgeson had a serve roll off the tape for an ace to set up set point.

Chapman was rolling into the second set and built a 22-11 lead. The Bulldogs wouldn't go down quickly as they scored the next five points. Senior Erika Wiles ended the run with a kill of her own and was in on a block later in the set as the teams traded points until the Panthers clinched a 2-0 lead.

Redlands built an early 4-1 lead in the third put the Panthers roared back and took a 13-9 lead after stringing together five consecutive points. Gagnon and Lumsden both had back-to-back kills to fuel the run. After Redlands made it 13-12 with a three-point run of their own, freshman Angela Atis came in to serve and was on the line for the next seven points as Chapman put the match out of reach.

The Panthers have just three matches left in the regular season and sit in third in the conference standings but just in front of Cal Lutheran and Whittier. Chapman travels to Occidental tomorrow for a 6 p.m. match and will celebrate Senior Day on Tuesday when they take on No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the Hutton Sports Center at 7 p.m.
