Women's soccer drops title match at CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University women's soccer team's run through the SCIAC Tournament came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. CMS scored two goals in each half to grab the tournament title and the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Despite a tough loss in the championship match, Chapman showed a remarkable turnaround. After finishing eighth in the SCIAC a year ago, the Panthers took fourth to qualify for the SCIAC Tournament and upset top-seeded Pomona-Piter in the semifinals on Wednesday.

With several freshman playing a large role in the turnaround, the team's future looks bright.

CMS struck early and continued to build to come away with the win. Wren Osler headed in Laynee Laube's corner kick just 4:37 into the match to set the tone. Laube scored 15 minutes later and again in the 62nd minute. CMS tacked on a late goal when a free kick deflected off Chapman's wall and just inside the post.

CMS outshot Chapman with freshman Bailee Cochran leading the Panthers with two shots. She put one of Chapman's three shots on goal. Senior Kristin Kleinow ended her record-setting career in goal with four more saves – ending her four years with well over 300 saves and eclipsing the previous school record by nearly 100 saves.

Nine Panthers played in their final match as Chapman ended its season 9-9-2 overall and 6-7-1 in the SCIAC.
