Women's doubles reaches third round at Ojai

OJAI, Calif. – Two of Chapman University women's doubles teams reached the third round at the 112th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club on Thursday and Friday. In addition, freshman No. 1 singles player Sophia Duong advanced to the second round on Thursday before being eliminated.

Making her first appearance at Ojai, Duong entered the tourney ranked No. 23 in the West Region and defeated Caltech's Stephanie Kwan 6-3, 6-0 in the opening Round of 64 on Thursday morning. That afternoon she advanced to the second round and lost to No. 6-seeded Davina Meza of California State University Stanislaus in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

The Panthers' two women's doubles teams each received a first round bye. In the second round, junior Amy Logan and senior Melissa Boyer rolled past their first opponents, Sarah Baker and Holly Beaman of California Lutheran University, in two sets 6-3, 6-1. The duo won their team-best 10th match of the year and are 10-9 overall. The eventual tournament champions, No. 3-seeded Katie Eng and Verena Preikschas from Stanislaus, halted Logan and Boyer's progress in the Round of 16 on Friday 6-1, 6-0.

The West Region's No. 13-ranked Danielle Kaiden and Kelley Klebenow from Chapman shutout their first opponents Danielle Calbeck and Mari Pace of Biola University 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday. However, in the Round of 16 the duo had to face No. 5-seed Erika Januskova and Anna Mikhaylova from Fresno Pacific University who sent the Panthers home in straight sets on Friday 6-0, 6-3.

Both men's doubles teams and two singles competitors were eliminated in the first round on Friday morning. Ian Stanley of UC Santa Cruz upset Chapman's No. 9-seeded Justin Thompson 6-3, 7-5. Thompson was the only Panther to enter the tournament with a pre-tourney seeding. Thompson and his doubles partner Chris Williams also lost in the first round of doubles 8-5 to their Pomona-Pitzer counterparts.

Chapman junior Dylan Tevlin and senior Alex Klein suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the first round of doubles, losing 9-8(5) in a tiebreak to U.C. Santa Cruz's Bryce Bettwy and Max Littlejohn. Tevlin then lost in the opening round of singles play 6-3, 6-4 to Willamette University's Josh Wong.
